Advocating for you at the 2025 Wisconsin Government Affairs Conference

MADISON, WI—For many, "credit union" and "bank" are synonymous terms—institutions providing savings & checking accounts, a variety of loans & credit cards, and a handful of other services. Behind the scenes, though, how credit unions operate is fundamentally different:

  • Cooperatives: Credit unions are member-owned financial institutions. Every member is an owner, and every owner is a member. All members hold an equal share of ownership in their credit union and have democratic opportunities to participate in decision-making within their credit union.
  • Not-for-profit: Both banks and credit unions generate earnings, but how those earning are managed varies greatly. Banks prioritize generating earnings to pay investors. Credit unions, on the other hand, reinvest their earnings to provide member with better rates, tailored services, and new technology.

The Wisconsin Government Affairs Conference (GAC) is an annual event where credit union leaders & advocates come together with lawmakers to foster support for policies that further the credit union mission of "people helping people". It’s a chance for credit unions to make not only their voice heard, but also the voices of everyday people that credit unions serve.

Why You Should Care

Unlike banks, credit unions are not-for-profit, member-owned, and exist solely to serve you. To our member-centric credit union mission, we work with lawmakers to support legislation that empowers credit unions to meet the unique needs of members while also protecting consumers from predatory banking practices.

How Prime Financial Credit Union is Fighting for You

At Prime Financial Credit Union, we’re not just showing up to the GAC to check a box. We’re going to bat for you. Here’s how:

  1. Advocating for a Fair Balance of Legislation
We believe in laws that protect consumers without tying the hands of credit unions. At the GAC, we’re pushing for policies that safeguard your rights while allowing us the freedom to innovate and create solutions tailored to your needs. After all, one-size-fits-all rules don’t work for everyone, and we’re here to make sure you’re never left behind.
  2. Expanding Access to Financial Tools
Not everyone has the same opportunities when it comes to banking. We’re fighting for policies that make it easier for people in underserved communities to access the tools they need to build a better financial future. Whether it’s a small business loan, a mortgage, or just a basic checking account, everyone deserves a fair shot.
  3. Promoting Financial Education
Knowledge is power, and we believe everyone should have the tools to make smart financial decisions. At the GAC, we’re championing for resources and programs to help people learn about budgeting, saving, and planning for the future.

It's Personal to Us

Here’s the thing: Prime Financial is more than just your credit union; we’re your neighbors, your friends, and your community partners. Whether it’s saving for a home, paying off student loans, or just trying to make ends meet, we're no strangers to the challenges that exist in our communities. The GAC is an opportunity for credit unions to influence policies in ways that allow us to better serve you.

That’s why we’re not just sitting on the sidelines. We’re rolling up our sleeves, meeting with lawmakers, and ensuring hard-working Wisconsinites are being represented at our capitol. Because when we say we’re here for you, we mean it—in every way possible.

We Can Build a Better Financial Future for Everyone

The Wisconsin 2025 GAC isn’t just a conference—it’s a movement. It’s about standing up for what’s right and making sure the financial system works for everyone. At Prime Financial Credit Union, we’re proud to be part of that movement, and we’re even prouder to have you as a member.
